Excursions from Marbella

Marbella has a mystical view on the Mediterranean. It looks onto the strait of Gibraltar and the coast of North Africa, of which the promontories on either side form “The Pillars of Hercules”, as they were named in antiquity. With such ancient roots in human history, this area offers enchanting and exciting places to visit. Here is a listing of some of these:

La Alhambra de Granada is a master piece of Arab architecture. One of the world’s wonders from the IX century. It is only one hour and a half from Marbella. Reservations are required to visit La Alhambra de Granada and Jardines del Generalife. In the official website of the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife you will find the necessary information.

This is a half day excursion, as it is at an hour’s drive. This charming village is home to the oldest bullring in the world. The views of the deep gorge are spectacular. There are some good tapas bars in the town.

A city of culture by excellence: It is being called the ‘City of Museums’ by the international press, and with 30 museums in a city of just over half-a-million people, it’s a name that fits. The city has gone through important changes in the last few years. It is only a 30 minutes drive from Marbella on the highway.

The Picasso museum, the Cathedral and the Alcazaba are some of the interesting visits in this historical provincial capital. It is very pleasant to stroll down calle Larios (the main pedestrian street) to do some shopping or have a glass of wine at one of the old bodegas (cellars). The Malaga branch of the Russian Museum and the Centre Pompidou Málaga opened in 2015. The Centre for Contemporary Art in Málaga’s own ‘Soho’ district, the Carmen Thyssen museum that is dedicated to figurative Spanish works, and the inspiring museum Museo Automovilístico, which includes a display of rare vintage designer fashion to match the motors.

Only a 2 hours drive from Marbella. The Mosque of Cordoba is a must, as well as the famous patios.

White Andalucian Village Route
One day excursion to see typical white villages of Andalusia in the mountains.

The capital of Andalusia is only two hours and a half from Marbella. It can be visited on a one day excursion through Los Barrios (Algeciras). Do not miss La Giralda nor the great tapas bars in the Barrio de Santacruz.

Beautiful white sand beaches in the province of Cádiz, at one hour and fifteen minutes from Marbella. Very good for windsurfing and kitesurfing. There are some cosy little restaurants in town.

Sierra Nevada
Skiing in the winter at a mere 2 hours drive from Marbella, in the province of Granada.

Tangier, Morocco
One day excursion by ferry boat from Tarifa or Algeciras. The strait cross takes only 30 minutes from Tarifa and one hour from Algeciras. Should you want to stay for a night or two to get to know the city better, we recommend the hotel El Minzah, a classic with Moroccan style. However, if you prefer a modern style try the Mövenpick Malabata Hotel & Casino. We highly recommend getting to know Morocco and one of its most magical cities: Marrakech which is only at 5 hours drive on the new highway, from Tangier. We can recommend you some good Riyads and restaurants.
