Estepona, charming town on the rise

Once a little overlooked but loved for its charming ambience, Estepona is very much a town on the rise. Mayor José María García Urbano has introduced a process of beautification and improvements since he first took office eight years ago. It has seen buildings painted and renovated, streets and squares embellished, attractive potted plants adorning the walls of homes in the historic centre, and a host of new projects launched.

The latter include the Arboretum, a delightful botanical garden that houses Europe’s largest collection of orchids; the beautification not just of the charming historical centre but also apartment blocks now renovated and adorned with pretty murals and flanked by artwork—which has not been commissioned at great cost from famous artists, but created with the involvement of local ones. This has encouraged a lot of civic involvement and also engagement from the younger generations, many of whom have the unique chance of connecting with their town in a creative, proud way.

Other projects include the improvements made to the Playa del Cristo, one of the most delightful coves in the area, the opening of the new gourmet market in the old fresh produce market, a new theatre and exhibition centre, the recent construction of a sports and athletics complex adjacent to the existing football ground – in what is becoming an excellent sports venue with special destination potential – and, most importantly, the launching of the much-needed new hospital, which will not only be providing vital medical services but will also become one of the largest sources of skilled employment in the region.

The mayor, who was recently re-elected with a resounding majority, has done a lot to promote the town, and residents and businesses alike have responded. With it the range and quality of services available in and around Estepona are developing apace, and resulting in a great new range of restaurants, cafés, tapas bars, beach clubs, resort hotels and shops adding to the original charm of the town.

In addition, Estepona now also has a growing number of high quality modern residential developments that complement the rise of luxury resort hotel, shopping, dining and leisure facilities that make this not only one of the most exciting places to visit and buy a property in, but also a great investment for the future.
